Not too keen to spend $160 on a new pair of AirPods, a 15-year-old teen turned Apple's wired EarPods into AirPods for just $4 (less than Rs 300).
"I started this project roughly two months ago when my friend got a new pair of AirPods for his birthday and I thought to myself, 'that's quite a lot of money for something I can make at home,'" wrote the teen named Sam Cashbook in a Reddit message, according to a report on Vice website.
Cashbook told Vice that he started watching videos of people making their own AirPods on the internet, however, found that most chopped the wires off of Apple headphones. This made him take his own approach.
He bought a hands-free headset (bone conduction) from e-bay. It transfers bone vibrations from the bones outside the ear, to the inside. He took apart the hard casing, desoldered the wires from the original speaker to the headset's printed circuit-board.
"I replaced the battery with something a little bigger and hot glued it all together", he added. Though he accepted that they looked ugly, but work well, but they include the functionality to power on/off, pause, volume control and skipping. The best part? Battery is rechargeable!
However, these AirPods come without wireless charging and obviously the W2 Chip.
